For almost 100
years Conventional Radiography has used film to capture, display,
store X-ray images, and still today film-screen technology is the most popular
technology for projection radiography.
Starting from the 1970s, digital Imaging modalities, such as ultrasound,
computed tomography, nuclear medicine, gained worldwide acceptance.
Only in the 1980s Computed Radiography (CR) has started
competing against film-screen systems for projection radiography.
CR has the advantage of being fully compatible with existing X-ray equipment
but, in terms of workflow, it requires almost the same steps as conventional
film to obtain a diagnostic image.
Today Digital Radiography (DR) has started
to be a reliable technology allowing real-time access to very high
quality X-ray images, which can be easily acquired, processed, stored
and immediately sent everywhere via the network or printed on
suitable media.
